The puzzle shows nine colorful drawings of cheese, bread, milk, meat, corn, potatoes, a cookie, butter and watermelon. The reader's challenge is to determine which of these foods contain carbohydrates. Knowing this information is particularly important for people with diabetes as carbohydrates raise blood sugar. The puzzle is just one of many found in ``What Can I Eat?'' - a nutrition puzzle booklet focusing on diabetes. Created by Natick-based Potluck Puzzles, the booklet is being promoted as ``a fun, interactive, family education tool'' designed to reinforce information on diabetes. ``What Can I Eat?'' and its companion publication "Are You in Control?" made their debuts in February.

Using what I learned at FSC about counseling and providing interactive nutrition education, I’ve created my own company. My husband and I are launching our business: Potluck Puzzles PotluckPuzzles.com

I have created two books full of fun, interactive nutrition puzzles that are designed to teach/reinforce important concepts in diabetes education. Using what I’ve learned by working as the lead dietitian for outpatient nutrition at Newton Wellesley Hospital, I’ve incorporated many points that are of interest to patients. We see many different applications for our educational puzzle books in the healthcare and diabetes community. Our first big sale has been to a diabetes camp in California!

In creating these puzzles, I often think back to my days at FSC, where I learned so much about counseling techniques. I clearly remember when we videotaped ourselves providing diet instructions and watched one another's videos in class. Watching my own video as well as the other videos was a somewhat painfully embarrassing experience, but it was an effective learning tool. I still smile when I think of a classmate who in her video said: “I am going to educate you on…” What a difference the choice of language makes. I also think of the health fair that we put on for our Community Nutrition class and our Community Nutrition internship projects, where we needed to be certain that our poster boards included interactive activities and evaluations of the learning points.

My experiences at FSC have made a strong impact on how I counsel patients and on the content of our Potluck Puzzles books.

Diabetes Diet
August 26th, 2006

Begin with a healthy eating plan. Healthy eating means eating more grains, fruits, and vegetables, and less meat, sweets, and fats every day. “Let the Food be the Medicine and Medicine be the Food” (Hippocrates). NOTE: Your doctor may prescribe a diet for you - it is very important that you follow this diet exactly.

Diabetes and Massage

"Everyone knows someone with diabetes. While the disease can be managed with diet and medication, it still takes a toll, causing symptoms that include poor circulation, stress, and decreased tissue elasticity. Fortunately, massage speaks directly to these symptoms, transporting oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, inducing relaxation, and stretching and loosening myofascia."

Cooking Healthy Meals

If your local high school or community college is offering a course of cooking for people with diabetes, that would be great. If not, you could take your current recipes and meal ideas to a Registered Dietitian. The dietitian will review your recipes and help you to adjust them to be sure they are compliant with a meal plan for diabetes.
